A slight colour of greater probability has been given to

the story of Peirce, the Southampton grocer and Chartist, by the apprehension of one John Gifford, a man answering Peirce's description of the person who shot at him. He was examined before the Magistrates at South- ampton Town-hall, on Thursday ; and a witness, whose name is with- held, swore that he saw the man go up to Peirce on the night of the 6th September, and shoot at him. The witness, however, admitted that Gifford had prosecuted him and his brother for felony. The prisoner was remanded till Wednesday next.
