Americans, having exhausted all the resources of reason and per- suasion in their long negotiations with an unscrupulous and merciless antagonist, recognize now that it is perfectly useless to act upon the assumption of German good faith. It is also announced from Washington that the United States Government have proof that Germany intended to make war upon America after the present war. We do not know what the proof is, but we have always regarded a German attack on the United States as a certain sequel to the present war if Germany should be victorious.
