Moonie sadness

Sir: Andrew Brown's article 'Moonies vs the Reds' (4 August) makes interesting reading, not least because he freely admits to be willing to accept Moonie hospitality, yet remain relatively untouched by the blandishments of that group.

I would have hoped that he might have taken the opportunity to remonstrate with the promotors and draw to their attention the considerable sadness that has been visited on many British families as a result of the activities of the Unification Church. Furthermore he could have expressed con- cern at the continuing reluctance of the Church to set its house in order and so Offend against accepted standards less.

It is facts like these which have per- suaded so many journalists and academics to refuse invitations to attend conferences organised by the Moonies. To the extent that Andrew Brown went on a fact-finding tour organised by the Unification Church, he has given them the sort of respectability they deeply crave. If, however, he uses the oPportunities he now has to express his concern at the tardy responses of the Church to the plight of many British families, he could make a real contribution to resolving problems.
