Q. I was recently revolted to learn that a certain

elderly American friend of mine has her 'collar and cuffs' done at the same time as her hair is being coloured. As I said, I was revolted — at first. Now, for personal reasons which I will not go into, I feel it would be advantageous for me to have a similar service performed. My American friend has her hair done at home by a visiting colourist she has known for years, but I go to a smart salon, teeming with celebrities, in central London. and would not dare to ask anyone there to do it for me.

Please, Mary, can you help — do you know a specialist 'collar and cuffs' colourist who will visit at home?

Name and address withheld A. My enquiries reveal that the areas you mention are not usually scrutinised so closely as head hair, and therefore do not need a professional colourist's attention to pass for natural. You can apply it yourself, buying the relevant 'vegetable' colour, complete with instructions, at the front desk of the salon you are most likely referring to. Since the mixture is usually sold for the purpose of home colouring of eyebrows, there is no reason why anyone should suspect your true purpose, or be revolted.
