west of Bailleul. He attacked on a front of fifteen miles from the Nieppe Wood, which covers Hazebrouck, to Wytschaete. He was, however, repulsed at every point with heavy losses. Sir Douglas Haig re- ported that French reserves had arrived and took part in Wednes- day's fighting, on the ninth day after the battle began.
