Conservationist

Sir: When it comes to my copies of the Spectator, I am a sedulous custodian. Before installing the week's arrival in its protective Spectator binder, I take great pains to press the paper with an iron in order to smooth away all postal disfigure- ment. Imagine, then, my horror when I read Gavin Stamp's article (The British Library', 2 March) and learned that North American central heating is harmful to books and periodicals.

In an effort to recreate England's prophylactic climate in California, I have, for the time being, taken to storing all back issues in the fruit and vegetable compart- ment of my refrigerator. If you know of more effective methods of conservation, I would appreciate "hearing about them.
