The History of Canada. By William Kingsford, LL.D. Vol. V.

(Kogan Paul, Trench, and Co., London ; Rowsell and Hutchison, Toronto.)—Mr. Kingsford has added a period of twelve years, 1763-75, in this volume, and intends to complete his work in three more volumes, which will carry it on, he purposes, to 1841, when the two provinces established in 1791 were united. This volume, it will have been perceived, takes in the earlier years of the War of Independence. It is particularly interesting to see how narrow an escape British dominion in Canada ran during that period. Happily, the province was in good hands ; but it did not owe its safety to the representatives of the British Crown.
