Some interesting debates lately occurred in the Second Chamber of

the States General of the Netherlands, on the needless severity of the existing laws for repressing the licentiousness of the press. The object was to have these laws replaced by others more suitable to the times ; and, although the immediate attainment of this object, by a vote of the Legislature, was negatived, the Minis- ters have themselves taken the question under their patronage,— redeeming a pledge which the King gave at the opening of the session.
