Among the " movements " which have been struck up

lately, is one against the Income-tax ; and it is a movement that has de- cidedly "taken." Beginning modestly, in small local meetings, and hints here and there for the " reduction " of the tax, it has now expanded to the proportions of " great " meetings, and a demand for the "total and immediate" repeal. Birmingham has stood forward, not first, but largely and sturdily ; and a certain tone in the speeches which find most favour implies a reality and spirit in the demand which may give Ministers trouble in the coming session.
