The well-known Indian man of science, Sir Jagadis Chaudu. Bose,

exhibited his " orescograph " to Mr. Balfour and others at the India Office on Tuesday. The " oresoograph " is a mag- netic and optical device for measuring the growth of plants. The minute organic changes arc magnified far beyond the power of the best microscope, so that they can be studied with ease. It is thus possible to test the effect of chemicals or of electricity on a plant, and to discover the best means of stimulating or retarding its growth. The value of such a device should be very great, if it enables the value of any new method of oultivation to be assessed quickly and with scientific precision instead of by years of experiment. Sir Jagadis Chandra Bose will have deserved well of mankind if his invention leads to far-reaching advances in agriculture, for the world needs more food.
