SHOULD A CHRISTIAN FIGHT FOR HIS _ COUNTRY?

[To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.] Stn,—As a possible solution of this problem, I venture to give

an extract from a story by Mr. W. W. Jacobs, whose philo- sophy and humour are alike invaluable.

" I understand things now,' said Mr. Billing, nodding sagely, ' turning the other chook'a all right, so long as you don't do it always. If you don't let 'em know whether you are going to turn the other cheek or knock their blessed heads off, it's all right. 'Arf the trouble in the world is caused by lotting people know too much.' " As a combination of Christian ethics and sound worldly common sense, I think this " formula" can hardly be improved upon : and it is as workable for the peace-loving individual as for the nation.—I am, Sir, &c., A.
