Letter writing

Sir: Your appeal for ex-Letters to The Times-writers to redirect their efforts to Doughty St is destined to go unanswered for the following reason: one of the most endearing things about writing to The Times is that one can be fairly sure of failure to be published. Certainly, if my own experience is anything to go by, all letters I have sent elsewhere, whether to the New Statesman, the Catholic Herald, the Oxford Mail et al have all been published promptly, whereas only two (out of about ten or twelve) of my letters to The Times have got into print. If my impression is correct it is likely not only that writers to The Times are 'still' sending their letters there but that more of us are sending even more letters more frequently.

Certainly the Guardian is a dead loss — it is still as full of worthy-but-dull letters as ever it was.
