The German attack, it may be added, is of great

political as well as military importance. It is obviously the answer of the German General Staff to those critics inside as well as outside the Govern- ment who share the doubts expressed by Herr von Kuhlmann. If General von Ludendorff fails (Ince more to gain a decision, the doubters will be strengthened and the military caste will lose still more of its prestige. Doubtless we shall have more German offensives before the year is out, but a decisive check such as the French will, we hope, administer this time to the Crown Prince's hosts must discourage the German Army as well as the German people. If the enemy should start another " peace offensive" after this battle for Reims, it will be a sign that he knows that the game is up.
