There has recently been a tendency, noticeable among banks and

multiple retail shops, to realize that work as a junior in these institutions is not the best training for the more re- sponsible posts, which have accordingly to be filled from outside. It has even been realized that work of any kind is better done when the system of which it is a part is properly understood. In Principles of Store Practice (Jonathan Cape, 5s.), therefore, Mr. Frank Chitham attempts to supply this information in the case of multiple shops, for the benefit of those who " aspire to be buyers," He does it well, as he should, for he has had vast experience in the field. His remarks about advertising are particularly worthy of notice, and we could wish that they were more generally observed.
