Abortion

Sir: Dr Margaret White, that staunch pillar of the Mothers' Union, asks me for yet more statistical evidence of Catholic wickedness. I never like to refuse a lady!

As recently as June 28 the Secretary of State for Social Services was asked for the latest Irish abortion figures. Dr David Owen replied with the following table. This relates to Irish residents having notified abortions in England and Wales.

pEoi rAllowingpou lat i on, for the relative sizes of our Eire has the equivalent of 20,000 notified abortions a year. (Not bad for a priest-ridden country where contraception is largely illegal!) In ad, dition, at a conservative guess, a similar number come to England, stay with friends or relatives while having their abortions, using an English accommodation address, and thus are never written down as Irish residents.

This calculation makes no allowance for illegal abortions performed back home. And all this wickedness, without beneift of Brook Clinics. Begorrahr
