Tax anomalies

Sir: Over many years and through successive governments of both parties, single people have been made to bear an unfair share of the tax burden.

I most willingly pay my taxes to help the unfortunate people of this life (the sick, the handicapped, etc) but I fail to see why we should be expected to support childless married women!

It is questionable whether single people should be called upon to contribute so much to keep other people's children, but it is completely absurd that a married man should be given an extra £240 tax-free personal allowance to help him with the expense of keeping a wite.

To add to the stupidity of the situation, if a married couple both work (as they are now able to do for a substantial part of their married life) he still receives an allowance to keep her, and she receives the same allowance as a single person, thus they have between them not just double the allowance of a single person, but an extra tax-free £240 on top of that. If a man wished to retain the old idea of being completely financially responsible for his wife rather than them bearing joint responsibility for their money, he sould at least bear that responsibility and not be allowed by the tax system to throw some of the burden onto other people (among them, unsupported women!) Should we not fight this injustice?
