The Committee of the House of Commons appointed to try

the pe- tition complaining of an undue return for Sudbury, met today. Mr. Sergeant Merewether and Mr. Leahy appeared for the petitioners ; Mr. Sergeant Wranghaua and Mr. Austin for the sitting Member. The al- legation on the part of the petitioners is this. Mr. Acland had an in- tention of coming forward as-candidate for Sudbury, if Mr. Bagshaw did not do so ; and before the election, he offered to the Mayor a deposit for the expenses ; hat the Mayor declined receiving it. The election took place, in the Town-hall, on the 5th of June. After Mr. Tomline, the sitting Member, had been proposed, there was a pause, Mr. Acland wishing time to be allowed for the appearance of Mr. Bagshaw. The Mayor said that he should wait a minute. He was about to declare Mr. Tomline elected, when Mr. Acland begged him not to be in such a hurry. Two persons then proposed and seconded Mr. Bagshaw; but the Mayor said that the minute had expired, and he declared Mr. Tomline duly elected.

The Committee have begun with the evidence for the petition.
