CHRISTIAN SCIENTIST ATTITUDES

SIR,—In his review of Mr. Maurice Collis's book on Lady Astor (Spectator, May 6), Mr. Angus Wilson suggests that it was owing to their being Christian Scientists that the Astors and Lord Lothian advo- cated a policy of appeasement toward Hitler in the Thirties. This odd thesis is confronted by the simple fact that the Christian Science Monitor, through that same period, consistently opposed any form of appeasement.

There were differences of opinion among Christian Scientists, as among members of other religious groups, as to the best way of d,ealing with Hitler; but it is worth remembering that some Christian Scientists in Germany went to prison and concentra- tion camp for their opposition to Nazism.—Yours faithfully, for Great Britain and Ireland, Donington House, 30 Norfolk Street, Strand, WC2
