Fires and Public Entertainments. By Edwin 0. Sachs. (C. and

E. Layton.)—The disaster of the Charity Bazaar at Paris on May 4th is the occasion of this compilation. The list of the century's fires (1797-1897) mounts up to eleven hundred and fifteen, and the deaths to at least ten thousand. A little over two-fifths of these occurred in the United States. These latter have not, however, been proportionately fatal, for the deaths amount to something less than a twelfth. But in twenty-eight occurring in "other countries" there have been lost more than four thousand lives.
