The introduction of Anatole France under another name towards the

end of Bernanos' novel was a bold stroke. The short shrift he receives is indicative of the attitude to Anatole France of the younger generation in general. The Dadaists- and Surrealists as well as the Roman Catholics have long since joined in the attack. Many people indeed are wondering what M. Paul Valery will have to say for his famous prede- cessor when he pronounces France's eulogy on taking his seat in the French Academy.
