SLOGANS AND CRUSADES Si,—When the Rev. J. R. M. Hawthorne,

of Norwich, was made a Deacon of the Church of England, he was asked the question, `Do you un- feignedly believe all the Canonical Scriptures of the Old and New Testament?' His required reply was: 'I do believe them.' .

This is also Dr. Billy Graham's approach to Holy Scripture. Over and over again in his addresses he uses the phrase, 'The Bible says . . Your -contributor" John Goss reports that Mr. Hawthorne declared in the Church Assembly that to support Mr. Jack Wallace's motion commending the 1966 Billy Graham, Crusade to the prayers of Christian people, would be `to commit the Assembly to Dr. Graham's fundamentalist approach to the Scriptures.' Did Mr. Hawthorne intend to imply by this statement that he no longer considers himself to be committed to the affirmation he made at his ordination?
