[To THE EDITOR OF THE "SPECTATOR."] Sia,—With reference to your criticism of my Socialist novel, ." A More Excellent Way," which appeared in the Spectator of October 6th, will you allow me to explain that the question whether Freethought is the same thing as Home-rule, was asked me last year by a lady of good social position, the widow of a clergyman ? And a few years ago, I was assured by a lady in a London drawing-room that atheists believe in the Devil ; and although I told her she was mistaken, and that, being a freethinker myself, I ought to know, she would not believe me. These instances of ignorance on the part of Christians are certainly remarkable, but they are not caricatures invented by the author ; and therefore the person to be blamed for
