But the sins that are being committed are frequently those

of ignorance rather than of malice. It is not clear to most well-meaning people that it is an offence to use colours which clash with the whole character of a district ; but such knowledge if it cannot be acquired can at least be hired. Professor Abercrombie condemned in particular the fronts of the multiple shops in villages, but he was hopeful about the petrol pumps, as he said that a new type has been produced which is inoffensive. He suggested that lovers of the country-side should boycott all goods which were blatantly advertised. Another valuable suggestion was that of Mr. John Bailey that vigilance committees _should be created in every county to " ginger up " the people. " It is," he said, " largely a social question." That is quite true, and it is also true that a competitive pride, could be provoked between counties.
