DONCASTER RACE?.

The great Northern Races have this year been more fully attended than ever. The weather has been fine; the course was in admirable condition ; and the sport is reported excellent.

On Tuesday, the opening day, Mr. Ridley's Preston (Bates) carried off the Fitzwilliam Handicap Stakes from twelve competitors ; and Lord Ches- terfield's Ty pee (Flatman) won the Great-Yorkshire Handicap. There were sixteen candidates for the prize.

Wednesday was the St. Leger day. There was but a small field—nine.

" The start was admirably effected, the horses getting away at the first attempt. Ellington was first off, but was immediately pulled back, and Merlin took up the running, with Squire Watt second, Warlock third, Rogerthorpe fourth, Bonnie Scotland fifth, Ellington next, and Artillery last. As they breasted the hill on making towards the far side of the course, Rogerthorpe drew into the second place, and on reaching the top of it was in possession of a clear lead, Squire Watt going on second, Merlin third, Warlock fourth, Bonnie Scotland fifth, Victoria sixth, El- lington seventh, Clarissa colt eighth, and Artillery last, a wide interval separating each In this order, `Indian file,' they ran to the Red-house ; where Squire Watt was beaten, and he and the Clarissa colt dropped into the rear. Artillery now be- vn to draw forward, Rogerthorpe maintaining the lead with Merlin, Warlock and Bonnie Scotland next in pursuit. At the bend, Rogerthorpe gave way, and Merlin resumed the lead, which he held to nearly the half-distance ; where he dropped back, and Warlock came out, with Bonnie Scotland and Artillery, second and third, in close pursuit. Warlock, however, went on, and at last won by two lengths. Artillery caught Bonnie Scotland just on the post, and made a dead heat with him for second place. At about three lengths behind them was Rogerthorpe, fourth , Merlin and Victoria were fifth and sixth, close up with Rogerthorpe; Ellington, Clarissa colt, and Squire Watt, were pulled up, and passed the post together in the order named."

The Portland Plate, on the same day, brought out a large field. The plate is worth 2001. ; the stakes 5001. Thirty horses started : the winner Was Mr. Hind's Lance, ridden by Wilberforce. The race was closely con- tested ; Lance beating Mr. Jackson's Lord Alfred (Ashman) by a head only. On Thursday, Mr. J. S.
