I am told that in the Irish Free State almost

every car you see is a Ford or an Essex—unless there happens to be a priest in it ; then it is a Fiat. That the average Irish- man in present conditions should make it a point of honour to choose an American car rather than a British is understandable. But why does' Rome go to Turin ? A secret commercial clause in the Lateran treaty ?
