NEWS OF THE WEEK.
FROM the military point of view the great event of the week has been the battle begun on Monday by the French—a battle still being waged. The German wireless, with a strange and almost uncanny detachment, speaks of it as the greatest battle of the war, and therefore the greatest battle in the world's history. That is true ; but it would have been truer still to say that, though on so huge a scale, it is only part of the great battle which began in the first weeks of the spring, and will now be maintained till the end.
