America was based on the methods of our Charity Organization Society, founded in 1869. The industrial depression of 1873 caused the charitable in several American cities, notably Philadelphia, Boston and Buffalo to systematize their work. The Buffalo C.O.S. was founded in 1877 by Mr. Gurtren, an English clergyman who had been associated with the London society. The progress of the movement has been remarkable. Some English readers may perhaps be surprised to learn that there is so much poverty to be relieved in the United States, but the relief work is admirably done.
