exceptional insight, information and balance which should be read widely on both sides of the Tweed. The writer has the rare gift of historical judgment, which may be described as the constructive use of the imagina- tion on the scientifically acquired data of history. The Epi- logue, while recognizing the existing situation in all its gravity — indifference to and even rejection of the Christian faith, for which the Church must accept some responsibility "- ends on a note of hope. We could wish that Mr. Provand would write as admirably on the English Church as he has done on the Scottish : the problems which face the several Churches are substantially the same.
