Sir, I cannot enter into the controversy over the relative merits of BBC versus ITV since I do not own a television set. I do however find much advertising distasteful and irrelevant, and it would seem likely that it is worse when it is pushed at one (ie broadcast) than when it exists merely on the printed page, where it can easily be ignored.

One subject on which I can, speak with authority, however, is the nonjammy condition of James Brock's face in childhood, since I happen to be his mother. I am at a loss to see the connection, made by Audrey Wheeler (Letters, April 14), between priggishness and failure to pilfer food when a child.

Finally, I would prefer myself, my family and my friends to be described as well-bred rather than ill-bred, if any such description be deemed necessary. Dorothy Brock 18 PetWorth Road, Haslemere, Surrey
