Sul,—With reference to the above article by H.G. Musketry Instructor,

I would suggest as a partial solution of his difficulty the construction of what was known as a 3o yards range before the last war; on these ranges full bore ammunition was fired. They were in use at many barracks, particularly those of infantry depots, which are mostly situated in populous districts. They require, of course, expert advice as to their siting and construction, but the labour could be found by the Home Guards themselves. I am not inferring that they take the place of a full size range, but they are invaluable for elementary instruction and also for trained men to keep their eye in and have the great advantage of always being handy for daily practice.

All this must be well known to the War office, and it appears to me rather strange that such a want of facilities as mentioned by your con- tributor should arise at all. However, I am not surprised. I met men in the front line in the last war who had never fired a rifle in their lives, I suppose this is known as " blundering through."—I remain, yours faith- fully, W. B. CURELL.
