SIR, —No money is voted by Parliament to defray the

expenses of the established Church. Its members, through direct giving, provide some twenty-Iwo million pounds per annum. This is in 'addition to the income of approximately seventeen million pounds derived by the Church Commissioners from gifts' to the Church in the past, which is used largely to pay the basic stipends of more than 15,000 clergy.
