Sm.—Your contributors to correspondence on 'Up- holding the Establishment' (August

14) well revealed the illogicalities in the arguments of that most muddled of men, the Bishop of Southwark, a South Bank ecclesiastic who hardly knows whether he is on the banks of the Thames or the banks of the Tiber.

One of the advantages of Establishment to Dr. Stockwood, not referred to by your correspondents, was the privilege of being in effect prosecutor, judge and jury in the farcical Consistory Court trial for alleged immorality of the former Rev. Dr. Bryn Thomas. Dr. Thomas, a man whose political views were, incidentally, an embarrassment to the Church of England, then beginning its overtures to Rome, was subsequently 'unfrocked' in absentia by the Bishop in one of.those mediceval. ceremonies he does with such panache.
