Hamlet hunch

Sir: On the day when Kenneth Hurren's review of a stage Hamlet and a television Hamlet appeared in The Spectator we at the BBC were putting the finishing touches to yet another production of the play. This time it was a stereophonic sound production for Radio 3. Mr Hurren's hunch about the actor to play the prince was timely. We had just played it. Should he chance to hear Ronald Pickup's performance as Hamlet when the programme is transmitted on Sunday 31st October I trust he will receive, if through his ears alone, the confirmation he seeks for a very right conviction.
