Sweet AF

Sir: The Spectator making it across the Channel to Brittany rather slower than once Isolde on her way to Tristan's deathbed, I have only just seen the refer- ence, in a Jaspistos competition entry (31 July), to 'Sweet Fanny Adams' as a ficti- tious character created euphemistically by licentious soldiery and since more univer- sally given daily, hourly, even every-minute mention. Not so. Sweet Fanny Adams was the name of the first wife of my maternal grandfather Robert Winthrop, who died on honeymoon with him in France.
