THE CARE OF BOOKS. Fro THE EDITOR OF THE "SPECTATOR."]

SIR,β€”In the review of "The Care of Books" (Spectator, December 7th) it is mentioned how an Abbot finishes a book with an imprecation on any one who should steal or take it away. When I was at school, now sixty years ago, the boys were in the habit of writing in their books the following lines:β€” "ho liber eat meus, Et testis eat Deus, Si quisquis furetur Per eollum pendetur."

Or these lines :β€” " Quisquis hum librnm rapiat scelestus Atque furtivis manibus prehendat: Peigat ad tetras Acherontis undas Non rediturns."

I have never been able to find their origin.β€”I am, Sir, Bic.,

The Lawn, Budleigh-Salterton. H. G. Basia.
