In regard to the charges connected with the party funds,

Lord Murray confined himself to a simple confession and apology—subject, of course, to his declaration that the trans- action was free from dishonour. "On reflection, I con- sider that the course of action which I took was not wise or correct, and I deeply regret it." It was characteristic of the Whip's point of view that Lord Murray added that "always amongst the deepest of my regrets will be the thought that my action should have caused any embarrassment to the party with which for many years I have worked in such intimate relationship." The embarrassment to the country appears to be a minor consideration.
