ANNALS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE, 14754925 Edited by J. d. ailosh

and E. C. Withycombe It is no exaggeration to say that the compilers of this little reference book (Oxford University, Press, 8s. 6d.) haVe put every student of English literature in their debt. It provides an impressively accurate and comprehensive annual register of all the principal English and American books published during four and a half centuries, with an index of authors giving their works tabulated in chronological order, and such supplementary information as the name of the Sovereign and Prime Minister. It enables the reader to find out with the minimum of trouble what were the principal publications in any given year, the date of publication of a particular book, the date of an author's birth or death, or his age when any one of his works was published. Omissions are insignificant, and errors, so far as it has been possible to detect them, limited to a few trifling misprints. No more useful work on English literature than this has been produced for a con- siderable time.
