The Duke's tubes

Sir: I wonder what gave your correspond- ents, Mrs Brown and Messrs McCarthy and Grant (Letters, 24 January and 1 February), the idea that I was an advocate of BST?

My letter merely questioned the statement that our Very Able Government had recently invented it, although to be truthful I must

admit, I am in favour of it. I worked in Paris for over six years, and the confusion and inconvenience formerly caused by London time being an hour different from that of European capitals were really (pace Mr McCarthy) unacceptable. Incidentally, I do not live on as-r here. I get up an hour later.

I would question too Mr Grant's state- ment that the introduction of asr has in- volved the creation in Europe of a common time zone. The common time zone in Europe has existed for years, and Great Britain has finally decided to join it.

The government did, of course, invent the name and a damned silly name it is. Green- wich Mean Time is British standard time. If the Government want us to live on Central European Time, why not say so?
