Sir: A propos Jeffrey Bernard's disserta- tion on condoms (Low life, 14 February), I used to have just the one in a public house on the coast of Kent where the landlord installed a contraceptive machine in the ladies. He kept it empty, thereby providing himself with a useful source of income.

None of the would-be consumers ever complained publicly that she had received nil return on her investment. This was 15 years ago. Would today's ladies respond similarly?
