Messrs. Hutchinson have begun the issue of The Story of

the British Nation, a new serial publication which is to be completed in about forty-eight fortnightly parts (Is. 3d. net each). Professor J. E. Lloyd contributes the opening chapters en prehistoric and Roman Britain. The text is subordinate to the illustrations, which are remarkably numerous and varied. For the prehistoric period there are many reproductions of Ferdinand C3rmon's ingenious Salon pictures and of photographs of stone circles and the like—a mingling of fact and fancy which is not without value.
