The intelligence from New Zealand is, on the whole, very

favourable. There has been no further engagement, but it licar appears that there is a considerable English patty among the natives, and the Australian settlers were coming in in large numbers to join the defensive force, on the conditions imposed on the applicants for confiscated land. The natives had fortified an exceedingly strong pah, and General Cameron was waiting for adequate reinforce- ments to attack it.
