3,84'3 A remarkable feature of the election was that each candi- date was careful to dissociate himself from the Coalition. As Mr. J. H. Thomas remarked the other day, the attitude of the candidates practically amounted to the statement, " For God's sake don't connect inc with the Coalition ! " The Labour Party was confident vf success, and the return of the Unionist was one of those opportune surprises that have vast repercussions.
