The Express way

Sir: It is unjust of Patrick Mannham to criticise the Daily Mail's coverage of Carl Bridgewater's murder while neglecting to mention the far grosser journalism of the three other 'tabloids' During the night following the killing they engaged in an unholy auction which the Daily Mail had no part in. The Sun offered a thousand pounds reward for information leading to the apprehension of the boy's murderers. This was capped by two thousand from the Daily Mirror. But the fearless Express ('the paper that cares') knocked them both for six by offering five thousand pounds. And in case there was any doubt their headline (over the story of a boy killed by a shotgun, remember) screamed '£5,000'. One shudders to imagine what the Express Group's new 'downmarket' venture, the Daily Star, will indulge in — ten thousand pounds, an XJS and a dream holiday for two?
