Fires have been excessively frequent during the week, without any

apparent cause. The fall of rain has been little below the average, the heat has not been excessive, and the notion of incendiarism has not been started. It might be well to inquire what proportion fires in uninsured houses be to fires in buildings not so protected, and also to establish a mo efficient system for announcing the fact of fire. Thera is too log an interval between the first appearance of flames and the arrival of the engines,—an interval which might be diminished by a wise use of the church bells.
