FIRMNESS OF GILT-EDGED STOCKS.

THE factors operating on the Stock Markets have been some- what conflicting. Yet, on the whole, a fairly good tone has been maintained, although interest in markets has been largely what is usually described as professional in character. Gilt-edged stocks until just lately- have been remarkably firm, owing, apparently, to the continual demand for stock by trustees and others and the absence of any competition from new issues for nearly two months past. The Stock Exchange apparently had come to regard the possibilities of a higher Bank Rate as a threat so often repeated as likely to have but little effect when it should come. With it continually hanging over the market, however, jobbers have allowed their books to run short, so that any demand for gilt-edged stocks misses quotation.
