MY polymathic friend Michael Von Clemm has excelled himself. He is chair- man of Credit Suisse First Boston, leader of the international bond market. He has earned the robes of Harvard, as a profes- sor, and the rosettes of Michelin, as backer of the Roux brothers. Has he now earned a Royal warrant — or, even, two? This week his bank supplied Her Majesty's Govern- ment with $2,500 million, raising the money jointly with S. G. Warburg, asking for $2,000 million and getting the extra $500 million by teatime. On the same day, from the same shop, Her Majesty's Heir Apparent acquired a new private secretary — Sir John Riddell, international banker and boardroom colleague of Michael Von Clemm. How can he beat that? The Royal arms over the door in Bishopsgate? Or a fourth rosette for the Gavroche?
