Jacobs reconsidered

Sir: Keith Waterhouse has recently remind- ed Spectator readers of his campaign for a commemorative plaque to the author W.W. Jacobs (Diary, 10 August).

English Heritage is responsible for the well-known blue plaques scheme in London and each year we receive far more sugges- tions than we can accommodate. Selection is often difficult, as it was in 1994 when we turned down a proposal for a plaque on Jacobs's Gloucester Gate home. We do not neglect the literary world, however, and in the last year alone we have put up plaques to Sassoon, Graves, MacNeice, Noel Cow- ard, Rose Macaulay, the Huxleys, Vera Brittain and Winifred Holtby. New propos- als are always welcome. Following the strong interest expressed in W.W. Jacobs, I am happy to tell you that English Heritage is looking again at the claims for his standing and a final decision will be made in November.
