The friends of the Marquis of Normanby gave him a

dinner on Wednesday, to celebrate his appointment as Governor of Queens- land. Lord Kimberley was present, and must have been a little astonished to hear Lord Normanby declare that he hoped the links between the mother country and the colonies would last for ever, and that they might be drawn together more closely both for peace and war. That is the sentiment of Great Britain, but has not been of late years familiar to the Colonial Office. Lord Carnarvon also—though he said an established dynasty was essen- tial to freedom, which it certainly is not, as witness Switzerland, MAreichusetts, and the British Colonies themselves—expressed a great truth when he said that England's best alliance would be the free confederation of the English race in every part of the world. Change "English" for "Anglo-Saxon,",and in that sentence lies the policy of the future.
