. Accounts from Lisbon to the 10th instant state, that

El Padre Casimiro, a fanatical priest, had placed himself at the head of a band of Spanish and Portu- guese smugglers, and was traversing the remote provinces which adjoin Spain, proclaiming Don Miguel King of Portugal. The priest calls himself "the pro- tactor of the five wounds of Jesus Christ"; and be wears an apron on which those wounds are represented. The Palmella Ministry appears to be consolidating itself.

Orders have been sent from Madrid to withdraw the Spanish troops from the frontiers. Thus an end is put to the very menacing state of affairs between Spain and Portugal.—Morning Chronicle.

Letters which have just been received from Gibraltar mention a report, that General Cavaignac had in the province of Oran surrounded and put to death an Arab tribe, consisting of 600 men, women, and children; that the war is now prosecuted on the principle of extermination; and that the French soldiers receive ten francs for every pair of human ears they bring in, whatever the age or sex of the original owners of these ears may have been.

Ibrahim Pacha arrived at Alexandria on the 8th instant. The rumour pre- vailed there that old Mehemet Ali, on his return from Constantinople, is to make the tour of France and England.

The Paris papers of Thursday are a geed deal occupied with the affairs of Tahiti. The last accounts from Captain Bruat are dated the 29th January; and mention that in making an attack on Hnahine, a small island forty-five leagues distant from Tahiti, to punish the inhabitants for acts of hostility against the French, 18 of his force were killed and 43 wounded. Some accounts state that the French were driven off by the Natives.

The Chancellor of France had given notice to the members of the Court of Peers that the trial of Joseph Henry would commence on the 25th instant.

The mortality has been very great in Paris during several days: on the 17th instant the number of deaths was 280. The average in ordinary times is little more than 60.
