Sour grapes

Sir: George Gale finds it hard to comprehend saving up for a holiday in Peru as a reason for working, given to him by the 19-year-old daughter of his friend (8 August). His attitude is summed up in the last line: 'Like we did, who never dreamed of holidaying in Peru.'

Those envious of someone with a more privileged lot always philosophise as though they, superior mortals, would act differently with the same advantages. If George Gale were 19, and a holiday with a girlfriend in Peru a possibility, would he relish working nine till five doing a menial job simply because others have been, or are, obliged to by necessity? Or for the good of his soul? Or for what reason? It sounds like sour grapes to me.
